Texas’ Roky Erickson was one of the more thrilling and colorful figures of the psychedelic movement. His band The 13th Floor Elevators presaged Texas’ other great psychedelic band, The Butthole Surfers. He had his share of legal and mental problems and, at one financial low point around 1990, some of his friends and fans came together to produce Where The Pyramid Meets The Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson. Honestly, I’d not heard of him before the tribute, but like many college DJs of the early 90’s, I played a ton of tracks from (and eventually bought) this album.
I think The Jesus and Mary Chain’s cover of “Reverberation (Doubt)” is pretty inspired. It combines the 13th Floor Elevator’s psychedelia with their sound to stellar results.
However, some years later I finally heard this:
So, yeah, the original can’t be improved upon. It just can’t.
