474. “Piazza, New York Catcher” by Belle & Sebastian

Scrolling Lyric Video:

This song was made popular in the U.S.A. because of its inclusion on the Juno Soundtrack. Another song by Belle and Sebastian, “Expectations” from the Tigermilk album was also on that soundtrack.

I am a Boston Red Sox fan, but my dad’s team has always been The Mets, which sort of makes me a Mets fan, too. Mike Piazza, of course, was catcher for the Mets from 1998-2005. He’s currently a free agent.

Anyhow, when Dear Catastrophe Waitress was released in 2003, he was in the middle of his years with the Mets. One rumor that was hot during this time was that he was gay. He has tried to clear this up by marrying Playboy playmate Alicia Rickter (NSFW). Of course, marrying an incredibly hot woman doesn’t necessarily prove anything to anyone now, does it?

Stuart Murdoch, lead singer of Belle and Sebastian, is also not gay. When I first heard this song, I assumed that he was and that he was scoping out Piazza in the hopes that the famous catcher was, too. Now, I think it is more likely that the song has a somewhat different meaning.

Its catchy as all get out and one of their finest tracks.

UPDATE: He just announced his retirement.

  1. This reminds me of something of a cross between Beatles and another Flower Power band that I just can’t put my finger on.

I think that is why I like this one because it reminds of someone else that I really like …
