I first heard of Muriel Anderson through Patty Larkin’s La Guitara album project.
According to her website:
The first woman to win the National Fingerpicking Guitar Championship (1989)[1], Muriel Anderson’s music ranges from folk, classical, jazz, pop, bluegrass, and international music. She has been composing since the age of six and has published works for guitar and orchestra, voice, and solo guitar.
She definitely creates an exquisite aural beauty with her fingers on Guitar and Harp Guitar. Her skill has garnered her praise and admiration from Guitar Greats, notably Chet Atkins and Les Paul, amongst others.
Leyenda (Legend) is perhaps the quintessential Spanish Classical guitar piece. Originally written as a piano piece in the early 1890′s by Isaac Albéniz; Asturias-Leyenda was the Preludio to his three-movement set entitled Chants d’ Espagne, op. 232. [2]
It was later arranged for guitar many notable guitarists of the day. It was also a favorite of the great Andrés Segovia who recorded the best known arrangement of his own.
I originally downloaded this for free from her MySpace page. Unfortunately, it is no longer available there for you to even hear. You can hear a sample here. You will need to scroll down the play list to find it.
Since this project is supposed to be Audio/Video whenever possible, here is Muriel Anderson performing on Harp guitar her own composition, Lady Pamela, released in 2006.
Staying true to the spirit of the iPod project, you need to hear this song and see it perfromed whenever possible. In that spirit here is a Video of The Legendary Andrés Segovia performing his arrangement of Asturias (Leyenda).
Wow – I can’t even handle playing a bass and Ms. Anderson is playing like 16 strings there. :O
And effortlessly!
This is a lovely song and one that I recognize. I wish there was a way to favorite posts here at Teatro Triste del Clown. Hmmm.
