“Somebody Got Murdered” is an absolute classic as far as I’m concerned. I don’t know that it got a whole lot of U.S. radio play outside the college circuit, but in my opinion its as strong a Clash song as any that Mick Jones sang – which puts it in good company indeed.

Despite the upbeat music, its a rather bleak song. My theory is that its a Joe Strummer reflection upon reading about a random murder in London. My favorite part of the lyrics is this:

And you’re minding your own business
Carrying spare change
You wouldn’t cosh a barber
You’re hungry all the same
I been very tempted
To grab it from the till
I been very hungry
But not enough to kill

For some reason, I find this to be profound. At the same time, it is almost as simple as a nursery rhyme. Interesting.
