2400. “Couldn’t Call It Unexpected No. 4″ by Elvis Costello

:24 seconds of him playing this at YouTube:

So let’s go to Rhapsody.

A music-hall like song about death, “Couldn’t Call It Unexpected No. 4″ closes Mighty Like A Rose. Its a personal favorite of mine, though I can’t get a good feeling for whether anyone else liked it or not.

I was about to quote a lyrical section that I especially liked, but realized I’d be quoting almost the entire song. I’ve linked the lyrics above and encourage you to read them – heck, read them along with the song if you have the inclination!

I always got the sense of the New Orleans funeral march when I listened to this, though I’m apparently talking out of my ass when I say that since New Orleans funeral marches sound almost nothing like this. None the less, that’s what I always hear when I listen to this piece.
