I don’t know what the hell the Grammy Award votes think when they vote for Best Instrumental Performance, but this simple track from The Flaming Lips won that award in 2003. I think they ofttimes give the award to whichever act they feel really deserved a Grammy in another category.

That is not to say that “Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (Utopia Planitia)” isn’t as deserving as any other song, but that this particular instrumental is a Grammy winner and the rest of the album isn’t blows my mind.

Well, maybe that’s too strong a term, since it is typical of the Grammys, but still.
