“Whistle For The Choir” was a top ten hit in England in 2006. The song was originally titled “Knickers In A Handbag,” which must have had some meaning for the band since the song itself is actually rather romantic:
So if you’re crazy, I don’t care you amaze me
but you’re a stupid girl, oh me, oh my, you talk
I die, you smile, you laugh, I cry
And only, a girl like you could be lonely
And it’s a crying shame, if you would think the same
A boy like me’s just irresistibleSo if your lonely, why’d you say you’re not lonely
Oh you’r a silly girl, I know I heard it so
It’s just like you to come and go
And oh me, no you don’t even know me
Your so sweet to try oh my, you caught my eye
A girl like you’s just irresistible
That’s really rather sweet, after a fashion.
The song actually does have a whistling section, in the finest music hall tradition. While it doesn’t rock in the same way that most of the other Fratellis songs rock, it shows that the band (and especially songwriter John Fratelli) is capable of finding some real range in their unique style of Vaudeville rock.
