3374. “Letterbomb” by Green Day

Fan video with lyrics:

The opening lines of this song (“nobody likes you”) refer to a section of the second song suite on this album (the track after next). The singer on the first two lines is punk icon Kathleen Hanna. I imagine that its the inner voice of the main character as opposed to any real person.

Anyhow, the song is an important “plot” song and a decent song in its own right. Basically, we learn that St. Jimmy is a figment of the Jesus of Suburbia’s imagination, that his own overinflated sense of self-importance is what led him to declare himself the “Jesus of Suburbia,” that he realizes he is an American idiot, and that Whatsername is leaving him. Lots of stuff to cover in maybe 20 lines of lyrics.

The music is tumultuous, as is appropriate for a character going through some pretty serious mental anguish. It sort of resolves itself as we go into the next song – one of the most popular ones from Green Day’s career.
