3405. “Restless Heart Syndrome” by Green Day

Some intrepid fan creating a video using clips from Requiem for a Dream:

They didn’t use the double dildo scene, which is just as well. I never thought a Jennifer Connelly sex scene would make me sad, but that movie proved me wrong.

Anyhow…

To some extent, “Restless Heart Syndrome” answers the question posed in “Know Your Enemy.” Your worst enemy is yourself, at least according to this song. In fact, this recognition that we are each individually the problem is part of what makes Green Day’s political music acceptable – in the end, take care of your own house first and then worry about the rest of the world’s problems. It would be nice to see more of today’s leaders embrace that idea.

The song has one of the best builds on the album – you really feel that it is leading to something revelatory at the end (and it is – the whole “my own worst enemy” business). 21st Century Breakdown is divided into three “acts” and this ends Act Two on an appropriately powerful note.
