3414. “Jeopardy” by Greg Kihn Band

Classic Official Video:

1983′s Kihnspiracy was actually two albums after Rockihnroll and the Greg Kign Band did release singles between “The Breakup Song” and “Jeopardy,” but I still hold that the song owed at least some of its success to the popularity of their first hit. It didn’t hurt that they created one of the seminal videos of the early 1980s. The video was so popular that they created a sequel of sorts for it for one of their next singles, “Reunited:”

Not quite as catchy a song and it didn’t really become much of a hit.

While “Jeopardy” is a catchy pop song, thirty years later, I find the disco hand claps that constitute most of the rhythm kind of excessive. They probably helped the song become a hit back in the day (because you could play this one in a dance club), but I think they undermine the more interesting parts of the song – like the guitar parts. What do I know? The song was a hit!
