3443. “Sleepers Awake” by Guadalcanal Diary

Listen to it at Grooveshark.

Funny that my favorite Guadalcanal Diary songs don’t seem to be anybody else’s.

I feel that “Sleepers Awake” is Murray Attaway’s finest piece of songwriting on Walking In The Shadow Of The Big Man, but I can’t find lyrics or a video for it. Much like “Ten Laws” from Flip-Flop, “Sleepers Awake” is a slow tempo, atmospheric piece that suggests a desire for people to wake up to reality. It features a great guitar riff by Jeff Walls, solid rhythm section work from John Poe and Rhett Crowe, and one of Murray Attaway’s best vocal performances.

There’s also a great sense of build in this song – the dynamics shift between the gentle verses and the louder chorus. This was still a few years before The Pixies popularized this style of song structure.

Anyhow, I encourage you to give this one a spin if only to make me happy.
