“Amsterdam” is one final song from Guster – and the last song this first pass through the letter “G.”
The lyrics address a friendship or romance that wasn’t healthy for the singer. The friend/lover has moved on (to the titular Amsterdam), presumably with the suggestion that they were returning. They didn’t return and the singer has finally reached a point where he’s woken up to the reality of the damaged relationship. It sounds like some heavy stuff, but between Guster’s upbeat music and some very clever lyrics, it comes across as minor triumph rather than a painful process.
Guster is a band that I really need to pay more attention to. I only know the few songs I’ve shared here and I like them all. I should pick up some more of their tracks and soon.
