M-784. “Horrible” by Jack Off Jill

I failed to mention on my previous post that I had heard the remix version before the original on Jack Off Jill’s 1997 debut album, Sexless Demons and Scars. With Track Two, “Horrible,” I actually heard the remastered early recording before this one.

Reading through the lyrics and others thoughts on them, I think if you put it in the Riot Grrrl context, it has a lot to do with body image as perpetuated by society and their resistance to comply since it exacerbates and some cases creates unhealthy disorders. Albeit, they say that some eating disorders are predetermined, but societal influences ignite, compound, and inflame the disorder beyond any sensible control by an individual.

I can’t exist anymore
’til I destroy you
I hate everyone
Don’t know what to do

Ingesting flesh and bone
makes me a cannibal
Or am I criminal?
I feel so horrible.

Horrible!
Everythings Horrible
Horrible

As a rabid fan, I gobbled up as many photos as could be found on the interwebs and you can see how her weight fluctuated through the years. Back in the 90s, and even today, if a female performer didn’t conform to a certain image, she was rejected and cast aside irregardless of her high level of talent. I honestly think that Jessicka penned these lyrics as a reflection of her weight issues and the treatment she received, both personally and professionally, because of them.

  1. She is a lovely person at any weight.

I kind of like her work with scarling better so far, but I’m only two tracks in. This has a classic goth/punk feel though which I still find very appealing.

  2. Unfortunately, you and I are the exception to the corporate rule when it comes to perception of appearance… SRSLY, curvy girls are better!!

Keep listening, you’ll be glad you did, this is her still honing that voice that will spellbind you :-)
