3566. “Rockit” by Herbie Hancock

Classic video:

You’ve probably seen this video, but if you haven’t, it is one of the finest the 80′s had to offer.

Herbie Hancock is another master artist that I am woefully under-qualified to discuss. He is one of the great artists of our time and it is pathetic that “Rockit,” while an outstanding piece of music is just the tip of the iceberg of Hancock’s remarkable career.

But, alas, that’s all I have.

The video was one of my favorites back in the 80′s. I still have nightmares about that baby at the 2:01 mark. Great, inventive stuff and miles ahead of any other video being shown on MTV back then.

  1. I remember this song/video. Herbie Hancock is best know in the Jazz scene and all but ignored in the “Pop” world. This song was crossover break-out for him.

  2. His first commercial success was 1962′s “Watermelon Man” which is now considered a Jazz Standard. It is prolly his best known track even thou many may not know that he composed and recorded it.

Or they may only think of 1962 Afro-cuban release of the song by Mongo Santamaría.
