Fabulous official video:
God damn, but I love The Hives.
I can’t say with certainty that they are the only Swedish band in my library, but they’re almost certainly the best represented. They were part of the late 90’s/early 00’s “garage rock revival” and, I would argue, are the world masters of this style of driving rock and roll. They would likely argue that point, too.
The first song we’re listening to is “Tick Tick Book” from their 2007 album titled The Black and White Album. How much do I love this song? It was my wake-up alarm on my phone for two years and I’m still not sick of it. I would wake up in the morning ready to attack the world. Ahhh.
Part of what I like about this song is that its lyrical structure becomes more complete later in the song. For example, after the first verse, they offer just a tease of the chorus with “because I’ve done it before and I can do it some more/So what you waiting for?” By the end of the song they repeat that line a couple of times, repeat “It’s too late/ It’s too soon” a couple of times and finally end the chorus with “Tick tick tick tick boom.” Its a simple way to build excitement in the song but a very effective one.
I love singing along with this whole song, from the screamed “yeahs” at the beginning to the last “boom.” Must. Listen. Again.
