3568. “Try It Again” by The Hives

Fan video:

“Try It Again” features backing vocals by the University of Mississippi cheerleaders. That must place this song in some sort of weird category with “Tusk” by Fleetwood Mac: songs featuring college musicians.

More than almost any other song in my library, this song has suffered from being next to a song I love. I almost never get to listen to this tune because my finger goes directly to make my iPod play “Tick Tick Boom” again. This is unfair, because this is also an excellent, fun tune.

The Hives’ songs are written by Randy Fitzsimmons, who was allegedly the Svengali that formed the group. There is some evidence that he doesn’t exist and that his name is a pseudonym for Hives guitarist and back-up vocalist Nicholaus Arson. Either way, he’s a hell of a songwriter. He has written dozens of strong rock songs using a very limited style range without ever sounding repetitive.

The rest of band includes charismatic front man Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, guitarist Vigilante Carlstroem, bassist Dr. Matt Destruction and drummer Chris Dangerous. Together, they have regularly been mentioned as one of the finest live acts performing torday.

If they’d just come to Hawaii…
