“Walk Idiot Walk” was The Hives’ first single from their 2004 album, Tyrannosaurus Hives. From that great sounds-like-The Who guitar riff to the sleigh bell percussion on the chorus, this is a deceptively intricate song with many pleasures.
When the song first came out in 2004, it was election season in the U.S. and I didn’t know The Hives were Swedish, so I assumed this was an anti-Bush political tune and didn’t bother seeking it out. Because I, too, am an idiot. The lyrics seem to be more generic about people believe things that aren’t true and refuse to learn from experience. While that is a kind of political statement, there’s nothing in the lyrics to suggest a particular connection to one political party much less to a specific political figure.
Not that I don’t enjoy a good anti-Bush song. I do. I was just a little politic-ed out in 2004.
