3610. “Lord, I’m Discouraged” by The Hold Steady

Album cover video:

We’re back to a familiar theme on the powerful “Lord, I’m Discouraged,” specifically living with an addict. The Hold Stead wiki suggests that the character he’s singing about is Holly, who is a recurring Hold Steady character last featured on “First Night.” She gone significantly downhill since then and the singer is left “hoping she don’t die” as the most positive possible outcome. Things aren’t looking good.

More excellent keyboard work here from Nicolay – the piano has an especially distant, melancholy edge to it. I’m focusing a bunch on him because, in many ways, his work is particularly excellent on this album.
