M-809. “Author Unknown” by Jack Off Jill

I am going to skip ahead to Track 6 on Jack Off Jill’s sophomore and sadly, last studio album, 2000′s Clear Hearts and Grey Flowers. I am motivated to do so since it was the very first Jack Off Jill song that I heard circa 2002-2003 on the Original MP3.com, which seems to risen from its ashes like a phoenix.

It was the number one download on the Metal Charts and was highly praised by listeners. I had to click the “listen” button.

Following the guitar feedback and the tight drum-bass rhythm, I heard the sweet siren voice of Jessicka sing first the verse followed by an angry shout of

No forgiveness,
You’re no martyr,
Sell yourself,
Make it true!

Honestly, I hadn’t heard shouts like that. I was used to the grrs and growls of Death Metal bands like Napalm Death and Sepultura (as long time readers would know) but I had never heard the vocalized unleashing of Riot Grrrl anger before. It definitely caught my attention and the emotion that was conveyed in that song most certainly moved me. I was possessed by the moment and needed to hear more… and that was just a couple of mouse clicks away…

As I wrote earlier in this post, this song was still an interweb favorite three years after its release. I realize that a lot of songs are still popular in that time frame but they usually have some type of Commercial Airplay with deep pocket backing by some corporate fucktard representing one of antichrists of music, a RIAA Label. Yet still as a testament to Jack Off Jill’s fanbase maximizing the power of the interwebs, thirteen (yes 13) years later, fans are still posting videos for the songs, and moreover, posting them covering a Jack Off Jill song. Here is one such cover posted in May 2013 that is pretty damn good.
