M-804. “When I am Queen” by Jack Off Jill

… picking up where I left off on my previous post, my pursuit to hear more from Jack Off Jill was easier than π since it was I believe in the Top Ten, but certainly in the Top 25. My next mouse click on a song brought me to another gem, When I Am Queen. It is the opening the opening track of 2000’s Clear Hearts and Grey Flowers.

The intro of this song starts with a familiar, scratchy and hissing sound reminiscent of a needle just dropped on the lead in for the opening cut of a good old fashioned album. As the piano begins to fade in, you hear the same piano track that was the outro of the last song Angel’s Fuck, Devils Kiss (Bonus Track) of Jack Off Jill’s debut album 1997’s Sexless Demons and Scars. Following an over processed guitar sound the drums and bass are locked tight in a steady beat that pulls you right in. Through-out this track, that rhythm section maintains a perfect canopy for Jessicka’s vocals and guitar fills.

Dialing back to the aforementioned musical tie in between Angels Fuck, Devils Kiss; the vocals portrays the feelings that take over after the initial, deep pain of betrayal. Jessicka vocal delivery is cool and calm as she sings the verses of her rising above the blood and tears she is currently drowning in. The verses prophesize a fulfillment of karma of the worst kind for that bastard Twiggy who caste her away like a used glory box, destroying her emotionally; It will always hurt, you fucking asshole![1] But until that time, she needs to continue to cut herself to let the pain escape from her soul to, as she eloquently screams

Drown drown drown myself
Drown drown drown myself
Drown drown drown myself
Drown

Returning back to my unrequited love affair with Jack Off Jill, the powerful simplicity of the musical composition, including the aggressive singular locked in performance of all the instruments during the chorus, is an emotional masterpiece that underscores Jessicka’s vocals. Her delivery is flawless and grabs you by the heart pushing ones own desires to take action for the woman who will be Queen!

Hearing this song right after Author Unknown won my fandom for Jack Off Jill and my adoration of Jessicka! Hearing Angels Fuck Devils Kiss right afterwards just reinforced my everlasting love.

Lyrics only fan video

More than decade later this song is also a popular one for vocalists to cover.

While getting lyrics and doing the usual research, I came across the best comment a song could get, …This song is one of those Ilisten too when i feel like cutting myself. Part of my self injury prevention play list…[2]
