M-810. “Vivica” by Jack Off Jill

Jumping ahead to Track Seven (I started this album with Track Six) from 2000’s Clear Hearts Grey Flowers which was yet another gem that I found at the first incarnation of MP3.com.

This is another slow, emotional ballad about a depressed girl, Vivica, who is depressed because her boyfriend is emotionally disconnected from her. It’s not a question of whether he loves her or not, but more that he does not know how to express it with words and possibly intimacy. Jessicka is empathizing with Vivica and tries to reassure her, but falls short of saving Vivica from putting an end to it all.

The musical composition and vocal melodies are constructed in a manner that evokes the proper emotional response of the listener.

  1. Egads, the ending of the accoustic version – I recognize it, but I have no idea why. I’m guessing another JOJ song?

Also, I like the original. The bass line especially grabs my attention. I’ve been working with a bass player for the first time and its really amazing to me how much his work can transform a song completely. Honestly, I never paid much attention before now.

  2. Actually I was referring to the scratchy needle sound at the end of the actual song. Some how the two paragraphs between the vieos were reversed.
