M-811. “Witch Hunt” by Jack Off Jill

As we roll into the second half of 2000’s Clear Hearts Grey Flowers, there is only one track of the seven that I have a long familiarity with. The rest arrived when got the MP3 album. They are songs that a lot of true blue died in the wool JOJ fans quote from and sing along with.

Starting with Track Eight, which opens with that familiar analog pop of a needle on a record that was the short outro on Track Seven. Happy Carousel music starts playing which is joined by lyrics. The layering of a piano and additional vocals builds a truly haunting piece that gives one the feeling of falling into an abyss after following the path darkness auraly outlined by the previous two tracks.

It has to be listened to from start to finish to fully feel the horror of its sadness…

Fan Lyric Video

I didn’t find any attempt at a fan cover, but I don’t think it would lend itself well for one to do so.

  1. I note the carousel is on the cover, too.

At least based on what I’ve heard so far, this is their most atypical track. I appreciate how different it is and love the stuff happening in the background (especially the screaming) even more than what’s happening in the foreground. Really creates a rich, creepy atmosphere.
