M-814. “Surgery” by Jack Off Jill

Track Eleven from 2000′s Clear Hearts Grey Flowers, is the last gem that I found at the first incarnation of MP3.com.

As with many of the tracks on this album, it deals with relationships, but in a more proactive way. This song is one of the few times (second or third at most) that I actually stepped up and advised the advisory board after reading the debate of anecdote versus antidote.

Jessicka is recognizing that her relationship with her male partner has causes her to be a different person. She encourages him to neutralize the situation to haas brought on that change. It is not her that needs fixing. This is why it requires an antidote and not a cure.

antidote – a counteracton, antitoxin, counteragent, neutralizer

She pleads that he needs to cut away this empty (feeling) which will change the way she feels about him indentifying what needs to change.

She later states that she can’t change because he feels that what he is doing is right, there’s nothing to fix except her. To save herself, or her own sanity, she vows to fight back.

The musical composition and performance is dark and desperate underpinning the gravity of the lyrics. Jessicka’s vocal delivery served the message of her lyrics well.

I’ve always considered this song to be one of Jack Off Jill’s good songs, but the more I delve into it, the more I recognize its greatness.

YouTube cover of “Surgery” by luvadelaide who put a lot of emotion into her rendition of the chorus. It gave me goosebumps.

  1. I love that the word “antidote” is even being debated. Egads.

I dig the rhythm of this song, especially the “Hold me under” section.

Yeah, nice cover. What a voice!
