Change of Heart

It took me until the mid-90’s to come to grips with my love and fascination for Tom Petty.

When I was a metal head, he wasn’t metal. When I was a punk, he wasn’t punk. When I was into jangle rock, well, he wasn’t really that either. In a stretch you could call him that, but he was way to successful to be considered alternative.

Petty was and still is a great songwriter. The man eats sing along choruses and shits hooks.

This is one of my favorite mid-80’s Petty songs. I think I bought this album on tape on the strength of this song and because I liked the first single, “You Got Lucky.” This was something of a darker Petty album and it didn’t really get as much airplay as some of his earlier (and later) stuff.

I like it, though. It sounds sneering and mean and in 1982, that’s what I needed in my life.

When I wasn’t listening to Iron Maiden.
