The #8 Song on Christoph’s Fake iPod
on February 29th, 2008The Internet is a large and lively place, absolutely overflowing with information. Just about everything ever created can be found here, along with every reference to it, and for that matter, pretty much any half-sensible phrase you could ever think of. The scope of it is far beyond human comprehension.
Wouldn’t you know it, my favorite song by today’s band doesn’t exist on the Internet.
This one should do just fine, though.
#8 - “Lost in the Plot” by The Dears
This song seems to be about a monotonous and not particularly satisfying relationship, but one that the singer would like to hold on to regardless. He sings about being left “in the middle of the ocean,” but feeling well enough to drag his ass back home and vow not to cry about the whole ordeal. Things seem to keep on going this way, but for him, that’s apparently fine and dandy. Unless that whole “can’t mess with our love” bit is supposed to be sarcastic.
Honestly though, this is one rare instance for me in which the meaning behind the song is pretty unimportant. It’s just one fucking sweet indy-rock tune that pretty well defines the genre and should probably have been a hit single somewhere. It’s not my favorite Dears song, but it is the one I listen to most often.
One thing worth noting about The Dears is that they started out as a Smiths cover band. You can definitely hear Morrissey in Murray Lightburn’s vocals, but the growth of the band from that humble beginning is pretty remarkable and I highly recommend their most orchestral and brooding record to date, “No Cities Left”.
My favorite song by them by the way, is “Autonomy”. Especially live. Unfortunately, the only place you’re likely to find it is here.
