869. “A Way” by The Bolshoi

This is the only song I have by the “proto goth” band, The Bolshoi. It is from their 1986 Giant album. I used to play this one like fricken mad on my WRBC show.

The band had several other excellent songs by all accounts, but I never bothered to listen to them. This is sort of bizarre because I really, really loved “A Way” and had access to the album for four years. For some reason, it never occured to me to try and listen to any of the other tracks. Maybe I’ll download one or two later. “Sunday Morning” is supposed to be their classic. Hmmm.

“A Way” is a harrowing story about a family with money problems that prostitutes out their daughter and tries to act like everything is normal. I am ashamed to say that it took me until I actually read the lyrics to figure this out. As near as I could tell, it was a song about a dysfunctional family, but I didn’t realize how dysfunctional they were.

Anyhow, this song has something of a classic 80’s alternative rock sound that didn’t get a whole lot of airplay on mainstream American radio, but that is very satisfying.
