2055. “Ride Across The River” by Dire Straits
Joey Michaels on August 31st, 2009Live:
You know, I added three songs to my iTunes library from my CD copy of Brothers in Arms yesterday because I hadn’t added them all. I figured this was one of those albums that deserved complete representation.
Apparently, the overall theme of Brothers in Arms was sort of anti-War. 1985 wasn’t that odd a time for an English act to be recording anti-war music, what with the whole Falkland Island business. I never much noticed that theme, but, as I mentioned when I wrote about “So Far Away,” I studiously avoided liking Dire Straits when “Money for Nothing” because huge, so I wouldn’t have been looking for said theme. Listening to it now, what would have been side 2 of the album is obviously themed around war and peace.
“Ride Across The River” starts off the four song exploration of war, soldiers and peace. I suggested that “Your Latest Trick” could have been a Phil Collins tune. This tune could have been recorded by another former member of Genesis - Peter Gabriel.
Anyhow, I’m glad I put this one in my library. I’m finding that I enjoy the long musical sequences on this album quite a bit.
