2009 Countdown Part II
Memo Juez on December 31st, 2009#2 Best Post of 2009
“Chiefs of Relief” by Chiefs of Relief
This is a great post and was the bellwether that I measured all other posts against. This post I referred to as Joey’s throwing down the gauntlet for all other posts to live up to. The well formed prose from extensive research actually generated multiple, interrelated posts in one.
First, the history, the genealogy if you will, that brought forth this band into existence. This led into how Joey’s relationship with their music developed. This in turn brought us forward in time to when he was actually looking to obtain the digital version of this music for his own personal enjoyment.
After giving you the background on the musicians, his love for this particular eponymous song and his pursuit for his own copy, it brought you to a dissertation on the problems with music royalties.
The combination of facts, emotions and well-formed opinions on modern issues made this post an outstanding, well-rounded composition that should be taught in English and Social Studies.
#2 Best New to Me Song of 2009
Joey claimed this as his favorite Cocteau Twins songs and upon listening to it, I quickly understood its magical lure amounted to something of mystical proportions. Stunned, I could only write something that sounded like fanboy drivel:
Holy shit!! The vocal acrobatics on this one make my soul happily flip inside and get an internal chill all over… She has captured the vocal allure of the Sirens.
Her voice still literally gives me chills that form goosebumps all over body.
