One final track from the King of America sessions. I would argue that “King of Confidence” is the gem among the extras. A great country song featuring The Confederates , “King of Confidence” is about being a confidant, not a con man. One bears a heavy burden when one is trusted with secrets and pain. Costello’s narrator spent a “couple of years” as the King of Confidence. Doesn’t sound like fun. This, another song about royalty, would have fit quite nicely on King of America. I would have left off “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” and put this one on instead.
