M-624. “Doctorin’ the Tardis” by KLF

In 1988, Bill Drummond (alias King Boy D) and Jimmy Cauty (alias Rockman Rock) took a break from their cultish social commentary recordings as The Justified Ancients of the Mu Mu to take their sampling skills on an excursion into the musical mainstream.

They planned on making a house dance track to the Doctor Who Theme. They quickly realized that the beat was triplet time and thought you can’t have house tracks in triplet time. The only beat that would work with it was the Glitter beat. [1] The resulting track was released under the moniker “The Timelords.”

The single was immensely panned by music critics but the single shot to number one in three weeks. [2] The song has absolutely no redeeming musical quality to it but it draws you into its silliness like an abandoned car to a rubber-necker. You just can’t help yourself.

Here’s the original 1988 video made by the band, featuring their 1988 Ford Galaxie Police Car, Ford Timelord.

In order to fully appreciate the complexity, genius and madness, here is the 12″ extended club dance singe.
