475. “Asleep on a Sunbeam” by Belle & Sebastian

Fan Video:

This song is written and sung by Sarah Martin.

Stuart Murdoch has tried to stress that Belle and Sebastian are a group and not his solo project. The two albums immediately preceding Dear Catastrophe Waitress - Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant and Storytelling - both suffered from the inclusion of way too many songs that were not written by Murdoch. This is the only track by Martin on this album, and it is a charming, peppy number.

I appreciate the fact that Belle and Sebastian employ multiple singers. Several of my favorite bands do this. You don’t see that a whole lot with American artists for some reason.

    You do with Bluegrass and some Folk bands.

    As far as rock oriented bands, there are not many that I can name.

    * Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

    * Styx

    * Damn Yankees

    * Night Ranger (I think)

    * Bee Gees

    * Osmonds

    * Jacksons ( A lot of Motown bands)

    There’s a couple of others, but it is really sparse today. Maybe it’s the old Musicians & Front-man mentality …
