Last.fm and RIAA?

lastfm-and-riaa

Update 2: Last.Fm issues a detailed response. Basically, they are still cool.

Update: The following information has been debunked, so I’m crossing it out.

There is an unconfirmed report that the Last.FM is handing over user data to the RIAA. Now, I’m not a subscriber to Last.fm, so this doesn’t effect me personally, but it is worth noting.

I am going to try and avoid linking Last.Fm tracks until the veracity of this story is confirmed or proved false.

UPDATE: (continued) Alex Pounds has left a comment to this entry that debunks this story. Basically, the Last.FM has categorically denied that this has happened. Hurray! I don’t have to look for a new source for music links!

    Hello!

Not merely an unconfirmed report, but one that’s been denied by Last.fm on-the-record¹:

“We’ve never had any request for such data by anyone, and if we did we wouldn’t consent to it.

Of course we work with the major labels and provide them with broad statistics, as we would with any other label, but we’d never personally identify our users to a third party - that goes against everything we stand for.”

Thank you for your update on this! I will update my post accordingly!

Streaming data is more of the Sound Exchange’s domain than it would be RIAA. They collect royalties for “airing” or “broadcasting.”

ASCAP collects royalties for others performing copyrighted material live or for music being played over internal speaker system. (i.e. a live DJ.)

RIAA represents the Record companies only in regards to sales, resales, etc. of the physical medium including electronic formats like MP3.

  4. Joey Michaels Says:

Apparently, the idea is that the Last FM program keeps data on all the songs you play if you have installed it - it is so you can track your listening habits.

Anyhow, they didn’t share it with the RIAA and, at any rate, last.fm is a subsidiary of CBS apparently. :0
