M-606. “Enjoy the Silence” by Lacuna Coil
This is my last offering from both 2006’s Karmacode and from Lacuna Coil. Even though it was the second single released for this album, it is fittingly the last track (13th.)
I though it was a strange move to release their Cover of a Depeche Mode Monster Hit considering the skyrocketing media attention that the album was receiving.
In the past, I’ve made no bones about not caring for the original too much. Lacuna Coil’s release puts a darker Gothic Spin on the whole arrangement. But when you step back and look at all of the cover versions of the song, this one doesn’t really stand out.
Here is the Official Video for the Lacuna Coil cover.
The Original Depeche Mode video is being surpressed by RIAA. But here is an MP3 over single cover art video of the original release.
Lacuna Coil does have a new album, 2009’s Shallow Life, which I haven’t purchased yet. I’ve barely heard anything from it either. You can preview some samples at Amazon.

I love hearing melody turned into a guitar line. That’s great.
You know, one of the things that I think works for the Depeche Mode version is the simplicity of the track - and the almost detached delivery of David Gahan. The choral delivery on the Lacuna Coil version in particular is undermined (in my opinion) by the layered vocals.
Its not exactly a bad cover, but I don’t know that it brings out something new to the song. It doesn’t even seem like its being done ironically - which is a plus for Lacuna Coil, but also would explain the track a little more. Heh.

I’m not sure why I even like it. It’s not awful, but …
