2251. “Lyin’ Eyes” by The Eagles
Live in the ‘76:
“Lyin’ Eyes” was the second ginormous hit off of The Eagles’ 1975 album, One Of These Nights. Yes, “Hotel California” was a huge hit, but The Eagles had a string of enormous hits before that song (in fact, “Hotel California” was their fourth #1 song) became synonymous with the band.
In point of fact, this was not a #1 hit - it peaked at #2 - but is maybe Glenn Frey’s great contribution to American music. Yes, he and Don Henley share a writing credit on the song, but to my way of listening, its Frey’s vocal (and the harmony vocals on the chorus) that really sell this song. In fact, one of The Eagles’ great strengths is their harmony singing.
Back to Frey, though, this is maybe his most heartfelt vocal performance. I find most of his singing to be coolly detached. Not so on “Lyin’ Eyes.” I don’t know whether he’s been cheated on or lied to or what, but when he sings this one, it sounds to me like he knows damn well what he’s talking about.
