2261. “Lips Like Sugar” by Echo & The Bunnymen
Live:
Echo & The Bunnymen have a great looking official website, just FYI.
I only have a few songs by Echo & The Bunnymen in my iTunes library. Sort of strange since they, along with The Cure, Depeche Mode and Siouxsie and The Banshees were sort of the English mainstays of early to mid-80’s college radio. While I confess I enjoy a lot of their gloomy but dramatic music, I was never inspired to dive especially deep into their catalog. They have plenty of enormous fans and, thus, can afford to have some casual fans like myself.
In 1987, they released their fifth album, the eponymous Echo & The Bunnymen. The album was their most mainstream sounding effort and it alienated a lot of fans at the time. Indeed, as a casual fan, I wasn’t compelled to follow their post-Echo & The Bunnymen career due to most of this album. I understand they’ve released several excellent albums since the late 1990’s and I may get around to listening to theme eventually.
The most successful song from this album was, in my opinion, “Lips Like Sugar.” Though AllMusic disparages the track as being atypically poppy, I like “Lips Like Sugar” for exactly that reason. It might not be a typical Echo & The Bunnymen song, but its very catchy and surprisingly positive.
I played this a bunch on WRBC back in the day and vividly remember singing along to it loudly with my fellow DJ.

I remember this song. It made great background music. I mean that in a good way.
Like it, but don’t love it.

They sound good live, BTW.
