2269. “The Killing Moon” by Echo & The Bunnymen

Old Grey Whistle Test performance:

Ah, now we reach, perhaps, the creative peak of Echo & The Bunnymen’s career, 1984’s Ocean Rain album.

The dramatic centerpiece of this album is the hyper-dramatic “The Killing Moon. Opening with a “a Spanish-style guitar intro from Will Sergeant over a doomy, bass-heavy setting, fading into Ian McCulloch’s portentous intoning of the first verse,” “The Killing Moon” is Echo & The Bunnymen’s unforgettable contribution to the music of the 80’s.

While I personally like “Never Stop” better, this is cutting hairs. “The Killing Moon” will be the song that the DJ’s all play when Ian McCulloch or Will Sergeant passes away. Its almost synonymous with the band.

I really like the guitar work on this one except it is too understated too often. You have a pair of 12-Strings that could really build a beautiful wall of sound that would’ve propped the vocals far better.

I do admit, they would lose that subtle melodrama that they seemed to be aiming for. My criticism is based on personal preference only.

I do like this song, but Do It Clean is still my fave.
