2287. “Hey Man (Now You’re Really Living)” by The Eels

Official video is cool, but its embedding disabled, so let’s try this faster version, live from the Jools Holland Show:

Well, here’s a turn around. From the devastatingly sad “Last Time We Spoke” to the optimistic - even life affirming - “Hey Man (Now You’re Really Living).” According to that wikipedia link, this song “reflect[s] the worldview of a man emerging from depression, a condition the father of Eels frontman E suffered.”

I have no idea what the source for that particular statement might be, and this is Wikipedia, so take that with a grain of salt. Of course, this is an album about his personal life, so its certainly feasible that this is what the song was actually all about.

This song sounds a little bit like a Men Without Hats’ tune - and in this case, I mean that as praise. There’s some very fun keyboard work, hand claps and a chorus of dues yelling “hey!” What more can you want?

It’s pretty upbeat, but seems a little oversimplified. Heavy on the Folk influence
