2290. “I’m Going To Stop Pretending That I Didn’t Break Your Heart” by The Eels

Live on Craig Ferguson:

Subtitled “The Ballad of Too Little and Too Late,” “I’m Going To Stop Pretending That I Didn’t Break Your Heart” hurts a little bit. Lyrically, the title tells you exactly what the song is about. The slow, dreamy music supports the painful subject matter - it reminds me a little of some of Aimee Mann’s music.

This song really speaks to me. I’ve not broken up with many people in my life, but when I have, I’ve never imagined that they actually, you know, hurt until much, much later. It isn’t that I’m not empathetic, but by the time I’ve moved to end relationships, they’ve gotten so ugly that I can’t imagine the other person wouldn’t be just as relieved as me to be out of it.

However, that’s not always the case. Sometimes, its just bad for you and you can’t see that.

Anyhow, this is about as honest a song on this subject as you’re likely to find. I love it, but its kind of hard to listen to.
