M-607. “Cuídate” de La Oreja de Van Gogh
As I pull into the final stretch of the letter L, we go totally Spanish for the last eight songs. We will start in Spain and finish in Chile.
These next two songs are by the world renown donostiarras that call themselves, La Oreja de Van Gogh (Van Gogh’s Ear.) Originally formed as Los Sin Nombres (Nameless Ones) in Donostia-San Sebastián in the Basque Country of Spain. The changed their name when joined by vocalist Amaia Montero
Cuídate (Take Care of Yourself) is from their sophomore studio album, 2000’s El viaje de Copperpot (The Copperpot’s Trip.) It seems to be a song for a former lover from an amicable break-up where they still care for one another:
Detrás del tiempo me instalé.
Ya ves, ni me quejo ni me quejaré.
Mi ser, mis recuerdos y alguna canción
son hoy mi premio de consolación.Y tú, ¿qué has hecho para olvidar?
¿Qué fue de aquella chica del bar?
Lo sé, prohibido preguntar…
… muy bien, seré sincera.Cubrí mis ojos con mis manos
y luego imaginé
que estabas ahí de pié disimulando
por mí.I settled behind the time.
You see, I neither do nor will I complain.
My being, my memories and a song
are now my consolation prize. And you, what did you do to forget?
What happened to that girl in the bar?
I know, not permitted ask …
… very well, I’ll be sincere.I covered my eyes with my hands
and then figured
you were standing there hiding
for me.… … Tú cuídate, aquí yo estaré bien.
Olvídame, yo te recordaré.Take care of yourself, here I’ll be well
Don’t forget me, I’ll remember you

Wow - my first reaction was “this is j-pop in Spanish.”
Then the reggae/ska bit popped in and I had to shake it off.
This is good stuff.

This is the only thing I really like from this band and you just figured out why. It’s Puffy Ami Yumi meets No Doubt in Spain.
