The lead singer, Jonathon Davis, describes his inspiration for writing this song:

At the time, I was going through a divorce, and I was in love with my wife-to-be, and I had a lot of crazy things going through my mind. I felt like I’d betrayed my son - I felt like I’d thrown him away, but I needed to do it to make me happy. That’s what inspired me to write ‘Trash.’
